New Year's Day is known as St. Basil's Day. Each family shares a cake, vasilopitta.
As far as wishes are concerned, the Greek and Turkish languages have in common the use of the plural. We wish each other not "one" but "good years": iyi seneler in Turkish and kali chronia in Greek. It's the day when Cypriots open their Christmas presents. Christians celebrate St. Basil's Day. In his honour, Greek Cypriots eat vasilopita, the "Basil's cake", a brioche that looks like the galette of the kings of southern France. Like the Turks and Greeks, Cypriots have a tradition of throwing a pomegranate (the fruit) to the ground.
