Official celebrations and military parade: this is Cyprus' main national holiday commemorating the country's independence.
It is the main national holiday of Cyprus, commemorating the country's independence on 1 October 1960. Independence was recognised on 16 August 1960, but the agreements signed on that day did not come into force until the following 1 October. The first commemoration took place in 1963, a few weeks before the country began to divide. And it was not until 1979 that a holiday was instituted to celebrate independence. In the southern part, several official celebrations are organized, including a military and civilian parade in South Nicosia
