While the French eat the cake, the Greek Cypriots throw themselves into the cold water. This is the Byzantine tradition of the Great Blessing of the Waters (Agiasmou ton ydaton): in the presence of the local authorities, the Orthodox archbishop blesses the sea in Agia Napa, then he throws the cross into the water that young men will retrieve almost naked.
