January 6 is one of the most important feasts of the Greek Orthodox religion, sometimes preceded by a time of fasting after Christmas.
January 6th is one of the most important holidays of the Greek Orthodox religion. All Cypriots go to church to ask for a prosperous year. Families get together and share different foods. While the French eat the cake, the Greek Cypriots throw themselves into the cold water. This is the Byzantine tradition of the Great Blessing of the Waters (Agiasmou ton ydaton): in the presence of the local authorities, the Orthodox archbishop blesses the sea in Agia Napa, then he throws the cross into the water that young men will retrieve almost naked.
