Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Malta
Timetable
Most stores and shopping centers are open weekdays, from 9am to 1pm and from 4pm to 7pm, although in some tourist areas they may be open until 10pm or even midnight, especially in summer. They are closed on Sundays, public holidays and often Saturday afternoons. Markets tend to open in the morning and close around 1pm. Friday and Saturday mornings are busiest.
Sales
Unlike France, sales periods in Malta are not regulated by law. In practice, shops usually hold end-of-season sales, before purchasing new goods, around four times a year. Stores tend to offer discounts from the end of June to the end of August, particularly for ready-to-wear chains. Handy if you're there during the vacations. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are also established.
What's very local
For the more specifically Maltese products, such as blown glass, embroidery or jewelry, you'll still find souvenirs for €10 or €15, but you'll have to pay more to acquire a quality item (between €50 and €80). And upwards, there's almost no limit. For an inexpensive but appreciated gift, you can opt for all the Maltese sweets, pretty jars of honey or jam, or go for the beauty and care products made from prickly pear (soaps, creams...), for around €10. There's no reason why you can't complete your gourmet basket with a few specific products, by visiting the markets.
