Celebrated on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is the day of remembrance. This holiday was formalized at the federal level in 1967, but it was first observed in 1865, at the end of the Civil War. It was originally proclaimed to honor the men who died in military action during the Civil War. Today, it honors all fallen members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Parades and commemorations are held in cities across the country. This day also marks the beginning of the summer season in the United States.
