All over the country. Commemoration of the independence of the capital, Quito, obtained in 1809 for a few weeks and often nicknamed El primer grito de independencia, the first cry of independence. It was the day of the first real victory against the Spanish crown, which recaptured Quito a few weeks later. On this day in August 1809, the president of the royal audience in Quito, Manuel Urriés Conde Ruiz de Castilla, was deposed and replaced by a sovereign governing junta, presided over by Juan Pío Montúfar.
