PUENTE DEL ATLÁNTICO
Located 3 km north of the Gatún and Agua Clara locks, the third bridge of the Canal, the only Atlantic side, connects the east and west of the province of Colón. Its construction, which was almost completed when this guide was updated, was entrusted in 2012 to the French company Vinci Construction Grands Projets. The bridge has two lanes of traffic in each direction, at 75 metres above sea level, with pylons reaching a maximum height of 212.5 metres. With a length of 1,050 metres and a central span of 530 metres, it would be the longest concrete cable-stayed bridge in the world, according to its manufacturer. One of the challenges of the construction was the logistics put in place to ensure that the normal operation of the Canal and the transit of ships would not be interrupted. Its opening should open up the villages of the western Costa Abajo, which could eventually experience significant urbanization, including tourism projects. Located at the entrance to the Canal, before reaching the Gatún and Agua Clara locks, the Atlantic Bridge will be the first major engineering work under which the ships will pass, a mega-structure that will soon become a new icon of the inter-oceanic route.
