The víspera de San Juan, or St. John's night, is a Christian festival celebrated throughout the country. In the past, this day was celebrated with bonfires, setting fire to old furniture and other objects in order to symbolically get rid of the past and better welcome the future, reading the oracle in the ashes the next day. These bonfires have now been replaced by fireworks and parrillas (barbecues), to avoid fires and the emission of toxic fumes. Nevertheless, this practice still exists in some small villages..
