Every September 9th, Costa Rica celebrates el Dia del Niño (the National Day of the Child). This holiday has become very popular throughout the country and celebrates the importance of guaranteeing and respecting the rights of minors, the future of Costa Rican society. In some schools and families, it is customary to give gifts to children. A party is held where children bring a large snack. This celebration was established by decree on July 12, 1946 during the government of Don Teodoro Picado.
