September 15 is the national holiday of Costa Rica and the celebration of the Independence from Spain in 1821. A flame of Freedom, which had left Guatemala a few days earlier, crossed the countries of Central America. On September 14, at 6:00 p.m. precisely, it was intercepted in the capital city of San José, during a torchlight procession(desfile de faroles), one of many organized throughout the country. Also at 6:00 p.m., the national anthem is solemnly sung throughout the country.
