"Día de la Raza" commemorates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and honors the different cultures of the country.

Originally, this day named "Día de la Raza" commemorates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. In Costa Rica, groups of school children carrying Costa Rican and Spanish flags lay a wreath at the foot of the statue of Queen Isabella in the Isabela la Católica Park in San José. Now celebrated throughout Latin America, this day has been renamed "Day of Cultures". Its purpose is to honor the multi-ethnic Costa Rican people and the importance of unifying the ties between its different cultures.
