Since 1971, every April 19th, the Costa Rican people celebrate their indigenous roots and the cultural heritage of their ancestors.
In 1971, the President of the Republic of Costa Rica José Figueres Ferrer declared April 19 as the Day of the Costa Rican Aborigine. This celebration allows the Costa Rican people to get closer to their origins and to defend the heritage of their ancestors. The festivities are commemorated in schools where children celebrate their ethnic origins. The indigenous communities organize different cultural activities.
