Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) French Guiana
Timetable
Shops are usually open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6:30pm, and sometimes on Sunday until early afternoon (although this is quite rare). Opening hours may vary from town to town, and in smaller towns there may also be closing days, usually Sunday and/or Monday. In the evenings, don't expect to find many shops open after 7 p.m.: here we live by nature's rhythm, and as the sun sets early, shops close early!
Budget & Tips
A visit to the shops in Cayenne, Kourou or Saint-Laurent will allow you to pick up a few bargains in terms of clothing purchases. But on the whole, prices in French Guiana are pretty close to those in mainland France, if not more so.
Sales
Held twice a year, sales in French Guiana last 4 weeks. As in mainland France, winter sales generally take place in January. Summer sales, on the other hand, take place in October.
What's very local
Naturalized butterflies and spiders are easy to find, but we strongly advise against buying them, as this encourages trafficking in these species. On the other hand, Amerindian and black-brown handicrafts are very popular: hut skies and saramaca benches will make great souvenirs. Other gift ideas include typical gourmet products: chili purée (flavored or not), spices, jams made from local fruits (maracudja, pineapple, lime-ginger, chadeck, mombin, mango, guava, Cayenne cherry...), ginger confit... and rum, of course!
Tourist traps
As in most countries, many souvenirs are unfortunately made in Asia. Cayenne's stores sell a variety of items featuring local animals: toucan, parrot, lizard... So be sure to buy local and authentic to encourage the local economy.
