The hotel budget is particularly important in Prague, where accommodation is expensive. Due to the high number of tourists throughout the year, until recently hotels were able to increase their rates without losing occupancy. With the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, many establishments suffered financially and even closed their doors, and the drop in visitation led to a significant drop in rates, but it was only temporary. The return of tourists to a hotel landscape that now has fewer establishments may instead lead to a further increase in rates. The same room in the same hotel in November, at the bottom of the season, or at the end of December, at the peak of the season, can easily see its price double.

To be booked

Reservations are essential in Prague almost all year round, as there are many tourists. Elsewhere in the country, you will have to make reservations according to the events and the destination: book a year in advance to stay in Karlovy Vary during the film festival, for example. Near ski resorts or in nature parks in the summer, booking will not be a luxury either. Also, do according to the establishments. Very high-end hotels in the provinces are rarer and sometimes overcrowded. Even if you find accommodation elsewhere, it is better to make reservations if you really want to stay in a particular establishment.

What's very local

The hotel situation is generally the same as in France, and there is also the same Air BnB platform system that the government is trying to regulate, as in all major European cities with high tourism. In Prague, as elsewhere, disappointments with the product booked can be frequent. In the provinces, however, the situation is less risky, but the offer is of course less.

Among the local specialties, depending on the place and the time of year, you will find rooms in local people's houses. Near areas favored by hikers or near ski slopes or pilgrimage sites, locals who have rooms available usually advertise them on a poster. This is an opportunity to meet in a cosy room and to have a warm and authentic meeting.

Smokers

Since the anti-smoking law of 2017, smoking in hotel rooms is prohibited in the Czech Republic. At best, try to find out if your room has a balcony, otherwise, you'll have to wait to go out or risk a fine.
