This is the "great feast", one of the most important Muslim celebrations, also known as Aïd al-Adha, "feast of sacrifice". It celebrates the faith of Ibrahim, who was ordered by God to sacrifice his son, before the Archangel Gabriel saved him at the last moment by substituting a sheep. To commemorate this event, Muslim families sacrifice an animal, often a sheep. In Algeria, the faithful gather at the mosque to pray, and also go to the cemetery to pay their respects at the graves of the family's deceased.
