The festival of Mawlid celebrates the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. Poems, songs and readings of the Koran exalt the virtues of the Prophet.
This festival commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad in the third month of the lunar calendar and is a public holiday in Jordan. On this occasion, King Abdullah II delivers a speech on the meaning of Islam and the teachings of the Prophet. Muslims gather in mosques across the country for a reading of the Qur'an, reciting poems and singing the praises of the Prophet. Families and friends gather for a good meal together and part of it is given to the poor and needy.
