The holiest month of the Muslim calendar is marked by a daytime fast that signals submission to the will of Allah.
Ramadan is the month of fasting imposed on all those of age to do so, generally from 10 years old. Pregnant women, the sick and people travelling are not required to do so. Among the many meanings of Ramadan is the willingness of believers to submit to the will of God and to conform to the tradition of Islam. During this month, eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse are forbidden while the sun is up. Every evening, the fast is broken with a glass of water and dates.
