Enjoying yourself Montenegro
Timetable Montenegro
If you are looking for freedom and good food, you have arrived here in the paradise of gastronomes! As in Greece or Serbia, there is no time limit for eating or drinking. The kafana - a very common type of hostel - are open from 6am and do not close before midnight. They serve you hot food or a drink during this time. No reservation is required and above all, you choose your place: here again, the customer is king!
Budget & Tips Montenegro
You will find in Montenegro dishes for all budgets. Fish and seafood specialties are the best thing in the country, as they originate from the Adriatic Sea. All restaurants offer a wide range of roborative cuisine, whether it is seasoned meat or fish dishes. Portions are large, and don't hesitate to ask for a half portion of ćevapi (beef and pork rolls) or beef by weight (200 g to 1 kilo for heavy eaters). Prices have moved upmarket and in the seaside spots, they have aligned with Croatian and Italian neighbors. But in the lesser-rated resorts and in the interior of the country, you can get by for €10 a meal. In case of a gargantuan dish, don't be afraid to ask for a box to take the leftovers home, it's even quite popular.
What costs extra Montenegro
In Montenegro, bread is offered on the table. It is not included in the menu. You will have to pay for it. Don't be surprised by the payment for cutlery either. The water is still(mineralna) and sparkling(gazirana). Both types of water come from natural sources.
Tips are included, but it is good practice to round up to the nearest euro: the key phrase is: ou rédou yé, which means "it's good".
The local way Montenegro
The pljeskavica is the national dish here. For 2 to 5 €, you will get this local hamburger that will please young and old. Served in the lepinja, an exquisite round bun, this giant size hamburger will exceed all your expectations. Many kiosks in town or at the beach prepare them over charcoal, just follow the smell of grilling and you will find them. They are served with a wide range of assortments from salad (onion, tomato, cucumber) to sheep's cheese mixed with paprika(urnebes). The ultimate is the punjena: the steak is filled with cheese that melts in a pork, lamb or beef. A real delicacy that you will remember for a long time!
Kids Montenegro
Not only are children welcome in the restaurants, but their age-related modes of expression are not a problem here at all. Since the establishments are usually quite spacious and often outdoors, children's behavior is generally more acceptable.
Smokers Montenegro
Montenegro is a smoke-free zone. The law is the same as in the EU, so smoking is not allowed in public places.
Take a break Montenegro
Timetable Montenegro
The cafes are open from 7 am to 1 am. So you can enjoy the Montenegrin way of lazing around on the countless café terraces, on the beach or in town. Legacy of the communist era, a strong influx is felt at the time of the break, around 10 am and at the exit of the offices around 4 pm. It is a delight to sit on a terrace during the parade, between 5 and 7 pm on sunny days, to watch the city's inhabitants parade around in their best finery. The cafes and taverns(kafana) often serve snacks and hot meals, so if you are a little hungry you will have everything on hand.
Budget & Tips Montenegro
Turkish coffee will cost you about 1 € served with a glass of still or sparkling water and sometimes ratluk, a kind of loukoum.
Espresso will cost between 1.30 € and 1.50 € depending on the establishment. In the same price range, try a real cappuccino or hot chocolate made from real chocolate. The other discovery is the fruit juices, very affordable and really tasty: kajsija (apricot) or borovnica (blueberry) are really top notch! Count 2 to 3 € for a rakija and 3 to 4 € for a Coca-Cola or a fruit juice.
On the other hand, the alcohols, even if they are well served, become expensive: from 3 to 4 € for a glass of local wine (red vranac, quite fruity), between 4 € and 5 € for a pint of lager.
You can pay incash or by credit card(kartica).
Smokers Montenegro
The custom of smoking one is widely used here. You can easily smoke on the terrace.
