Belize is a fairly expensive destination for those who choose to stay in a hotel and rent a car. In this case, you should expect to pay at least US$200 per day for both. If you choose to use public transport and stay in small guesthouses, you should still expect to pay a minimum of US$60 per day per person. Expect to pay around BZ$100 in guesthouses and at least BZ$200 in hotels for a double room. Many special offers are available on hotel websites, particularly in low season. A 9% tax is paid by all accommodation operators to the Belize Tourism Board, which is responsible for promoting tourism to Belize.

It is often a good idea to pay in cash to avoid bank charges on cards.

To be booked

Remember to book your accommodation at least a week in advance, and more than a month in advance during peak seasons such as Carnival week, Holy Week and American Spring break.

What's very local

Apart from hotels, you'll easily find homestay accommodation on the major holiday rental platforms, but beware: the standard of comfort is not always Western.

For food lovers

Enjoy typical Belizean breakfasts, often consisting of chicken, refried beans and wheat flour or corn tortilla. Meat pies and Johnny cakes are also often served in Creole communities such as Belize City. You'll also see fried jacka , which resemble our bugnes but are made from corn flour, of course.

Smokers

Hotels are generally non-smoking, although some upscale hotels in Belize City still have rooms for smokers. However, there will always be an area reserved for smokers.
