Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Belize
Timetable
Most stores in Belize are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and from 9am to 12pm on Saturdays. However, in tourist areas, some stores may have longer opening hours. On Sundays, most stores are closed, with the exception of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.
Budget & Tips
Belize is not the place where you'll find great bargains, as taxes are high and the cost of materials high, except for sculptures and handcrafted jewelry made from natural materials. Remember to carry Belize dollars in cash when you visit markets or small craftsmen.
What's very local
Mary Sharp's chilli sauces are sure to please any thrill-seeker. They are made near Dangriga and often include fruit, cactus or even garlic, in addition to the various chillies. A must-taste.
The sculptors of Placencia will delight lovers of beautiful wooden objects, often inspired by animals or local cultures. Price negotiations are always graciously accepted.
If you go to the center of Belize City in the right season, around March to June, you'll find plenty of vendors selling hand-roasted cashew nuts at rock-bottom prices.
Tourist traps
Be careful not to buy goods made from turtle shells, as these are still all too often targeted by poachers to sell their shells as souvenirs made on the spot. This recommendation applies generally to any shells or skins of wild animals you may be offered.
