Brunei's national day marks the independence of the Sultanate, achieved in 1984 after almost a century of British domination. Brunei became a British protectorate in 1886 and had a resident rule in 1906. Colorful celebrations in the presence of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah are organized each year in the streets of Bandar Seri Begawan.
