The Sultan puts the small dishes in the big ones to feast with his people on the occasion of the Sultanate's independence in 1984.
Brunei's National Day marks the independence of the Sultanate, achieved in 1984 after almost a century of British rule. The Sultanate of Brunei became a British protectorate in 1886 and submitted to the governance of a Resident in 1906. At the time of Malaysian independence, Brunei had made the choice to remain under British protection. Colourful celebrations are held every year in the streets of Bandar Seri Begawan. The inhabitants take to the streets in large numbers to take part in the various parades and processions.
