GIRMIT DAY

Girmit Day plays an important role in remembering the arrival of the Girmityas, Indian workers, between 1879 and 1916.
Girmit Day is of particular significance to Fiji as it has long served as a reminder of the hardships faced by the Girmitiyas, Indians who came to work in Fiji on five- or ten-year contracts between 1879 and 1916 and who mostly remained in Fiji afterwards, accounting for the fact that the population of Fiji is now about 30% Indo-Fijians. In 2023, Girmit Day was declared a public holiday for the first time and the government emphasized national unity and forgiveness in the celebrations.
