These festivities have their origins in Taoism and are also known as the Vegetarian Festival, since believers refrain from eating meat. It takes place over 9 days. Believers dress in white and yellow, symbols of purity, and light incense to pay homage. To witness the festival, take a stroll through Chinatown and visit the two oldest temples: Hougang Dou Mu Gong (Tou Mu Kung) and Feng Shan Gong (Hong San Keong). Water plays an important role in these ceremonies, for purification.
