Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Trinidad & Tobago
Timetable
In Trinidad, shopping is often done in shopping malls, which are becoming more and more numerous and which open at very traditional times from 10am to 7 or 8pm. If you don't want to be in the crowd, you should go during the week, because on weekends it is a family activity to go to the mall.
Budget & Tips
Prices are very similar to the rest of the Caribbean, i.e. quite high for most products, especially if they are imported. Credit cards are widely accepted and the best method of payment if you don't use cash.
Don't miss the South market, a travelling craft market that moves from mall to mall every Saturday and/or Sunday.
What's very local
The country's shopping centers often organize short-lived markets for local products such as soaps, creams or even hot pepper sauces, sold directly by their producers who rent a stand for the purpose. Prices are more attractive than in traditional stores.
Tourist traps
As in the whole world, you have to be careful on the markets, of the products announced as local but which come in reality from factories of the other side of the planet. Beware of camouflage clothing, it is totally forbidden in the country, even for children.
