It is also the national holiday. On April 18, 1980, the former Southern Rhodesia became Zimbabwe. This accession to autonomy followed a decade of guerrilla warfare, in which black rebel movements sought to overthrow the regime in place, which was largely favorable to the white community. Following the Lancaster Accords (December 1979), a cease-fire was promoted and elections were held (February 1980). These were won by Robert Mugabe's nationalist party (ZANU-PF), who was then appointed Prime Minister.
