National Unity Day is a public holiday that commemorates the agreement to unite the country's two political parties, the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) and the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU). Indeed, at the country's independence in 1980, the two parties clashed on the political scene, but their disagreements sometimes ended in violent fights. It was on December 22, 1987 that the leaders signed the merger of the two parties to end the confrontations.
