Day declared a public holiday to honor Zimbabweans who fought in the country's war of independence.
Zimbabwe Heroes' Day is a public holiday to honor Zimbabweans who fought in the country's war of independence. From the mid-1960s to the late 1970s, black movements fought against the segregated white government of Rhodesia. The struggle became more radical in the early 1970s and the country was the scene of a guerrilla war that lasted for nearly a decade. This conflict cost the lives of more than 10,000 black guerrillas, around 500 military personnel (white and black) and nearly 8,000 civilians (of whom around 500 were white).
