A week of festivities to celebrate the emancipation of slaves in the Bahamas. It's a chance to see some great parades!
Every first Monday in August, Bahamians celebrate for two weeks the abolition of slavery proclaimed in 1834. For the anecdote, the inhabitants of the village of Fox Hill were not informed of the abolition until a week later! Even today, celebrations in the village still take place a week later. The festivities begin early that morning with the "Junkanoo Rushout", a parade in African colours, followed by a large number of activities. One of the highlights of the festivities is the climbing of the greasy mast, which is a high point of the festivities.
