A Ten Day Festival in honour of Mourouga, the Cavadee culminates, after a period of Lent, with impressive processions.
This Tamil ceremony takes place every year on different dates in different communes. For the east of the island, it is the unmissable event of the month of January. The streets are filled with colour and music as the procession dedicated to the god Mourouga makes its way to the temple. Proving their purity and self-control, the penitents pierce their cheeks and torso with silver needles. In Bois-Rouge (Sainte-Marie), more than 1,000 goats are sacrificed to offer a gigantic meal to the faithful.
