We recommend you try jogging along the lagoon in the early morning or at sunset: it's magical! Some people just walk, and that's fine too.

What's very local

Reunion Island is a hiker's paradise, and hiking is the national sport. You can even hike through the lava tunnels, which offer a breathtaking spectacle. The island offers more than 900 km of marked trails, traversing an extremely varied environment (tropical forest, savannahs, sugarcane fields, lunar landscapes, oceanic landscapes, mountains...). There's something to suit all tastes and abilities: "marmailles" trails (for children), trails with steep ascents and descents for the more athletically inclined, family walks, night hikes or hikes along the wild, beachfront coastline... There's always a trail to suit you, so you can discover the splendours of the island at your own pace. We recommend that you consult the tourist offices, which can help you prepare your excursions with local knowledge and practical advice, as well as the Office national des forêts website (www.onf.fr), where you'll find a map of closed trails. The Randopitons.re website, which lists almost 700 hiking trails on the island, is also a must.
Beach tennis is played all year round on the western beaches.

Main events

Trails take place every weekend. Whether you're an athlete or a supporter, you'll find plenty to fill your diary. The best-known is the Grand Raid, the main ultra-trail on Réunion Island, held in October. There are four races at different levels, from the "Diagonale des fous" for the most expert to the "Mascareignes", via the "Zembrocal Trail" and the "Trail de Bourbon".
