The Māori New Year gives rise to various types of festivities across the country. Since 2020, it has been celebrated as a public holiday.
Matariki is the group of stars known in Europe as the Pleiades. For the Māori, its appearance in the sky signals the end of one year and the beginning of a new one.
In 2022, Matariki was added to the New Zealand public holiday calendar. The exact date depends on the lunar calendar. For the coming years, the dates are: June 28, 2024; June 20, 2025; July 10, 2026. Celebrated throughout the country, this Māori New Year is often marked by fireworks.
