Vietnam is a country that suffers particularly from mass tourism and pollution. Some natural areas, such as Halong Bay, have fallen victim to the ravages of tourism, suffering from pollution, plastic waste, over-exploitation of resources and much more. But discovering the country while protecting it is possible. That's why we've selected 6 sustainable tourism destinations in Vietnam.
1. The Mekong Delta
The Mekong Delta, in the south of the country, is one of Vietnam's most beautiful sustainable tourism destinations. It represents a 40,000 km2 wetland area, home not only to numerous aquatic and terrestrial animals, but also to many Vietnamese, who make their living from farming and fishing. The region has long been developing environmentally-friendly tourism, orchestrated by the Mekong Delta Tourism Association. The association awards certificates to the most authentic and sustainable tourist destinations. What's more, this is one of Vietnam's less-frequented destinations, which doesn't suffer from mass tourism like Halong Bay. Many experiences are possible, such as cruises on a non-motorized boat, for a romantic vacation!
2. Dà Nang
Dà Nang is a central coastal city to include on your Vietnam tour. The fourth-largest city in Vietnam, Dà Nang is the capital of sustainable tourism destinations, with a strong focus on ecotourism. To this end, the municipality has set up an extensive network of bicycle paths. Also, far from being a concrete monster, the city is home to a number of important natural sites, including Son Trà, a 670 m-high mountain at the tip of the city's peninsula. It offers a rich ecosystem just 10 km from the city center. The park is bordered by some of Vietnam's most beautiful beaches. Travel agencies offer excursions, including boat trips.
3. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is a natural treasure trove in central Vietnam. A Unesco World Heritage site, it protects one of the world's largest karst regions, i.e. a rocky area carved out by water. The national park is home to the world's largest cave. The park's management committee organizes numerous ecotourism projects and invests heavily in more sustainable tourism. The national park provides access to some of Asia's finest treks in mountains over 1,000 m high.
4. Cát Tiên National Park
Cát Tiên National Park is a sustainable tourism destination in Vietnam, offering an escape from mass tourism and the hustle and bustle of the big cities of the South. It is of vital ecological importance, as it is home to one of the largest remaining tropical forests in Vietnam. Several scientific projects are underway to learn more about the park's flora and fauna and, above all, to protect it. These include gibbons and Asiatic black bears. This makes the park one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam.
5. Hôi An
Beyond its particularly well-preserved historic colonial center, Hôi An cultivates a rich know-how and tradition of craftsmanship. Pottery, woodcarving, lantern-making and traditional fishing techniques give an image of Vietnam far removed from the big industrialized cities. Not far away is the Bay May coconut forest, an unspoilt wetland. Hôi An is an ideal destination for families or for lovers of tradition and nature.
6. Quy Nhon
In central Vietnam, Quy Nhon is gradually making a name for itself as one of Vietnam's top sustainable tourism destinations. This port town has made a point of protecting its coral reef and keeping its coastline clean. It's a good destination in November, when the diving is good and the climate pleasant.
