The midnight mass celebrated in the magnificent cathedral of Phat Diem (Ninh Binh province) attracts thousands of worshippers.
Christmas is celebrated by Catholics and Protestants (less than 10% of Vietnamese), but in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the rest of the population also takes the opportunity to celebrate a holiday. The religious meaning of Christmas tends to be replaced by a very commercial folklore. For a more authentic Christmas, one can go to the very beautiful cathedral of Phat Diem, often described as the "bastion of Vietnamese Catholicism", 120 km from Hanoi, in the province of Ninh Binh (possibility to spend the night in the land-based Along Bay).
