The many bars, at least in Yerevan, are open until late at night, or even as after-hours clubs, often concentrated in the same district, Opera and Republic in the capital. In a more subdued style, many wine bars have appeared in Yerevan, which generally open from 5pm to midnight. One can take a gourmet break at any time, with a chavourma, the equivalent of a Greek sandwich, or a lahmadjune, a local pizza, to which establishments are dedicated, which, along with other fast-foods, such as the pizzerias of the Tashir group, under the Mac Donald banner, which has not yet established itself.

Age restrictions

Alcohol can be consumed, in moderation, even if there are many temptations, from the age of 18. Spirits, starting with "gognak" and brandies (oghi), are adorned with all the virtues, and Armenians never miss an opportunity to raise their elbows, but alcoholics are rather rare.

What's very local

The khorovadz, a local skewer or barbecue, is a must. It is presented on lavash bread, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, accompanied by mountain herbs and served with starters (mezze or zakouski), from dolma to hummus and tabbouleh. Another popular dish, especially in winter, is khach, a pork or veal foot broth with vinaigrette, and fans will travel miles to find the right khacharan to enjoy it. If they are put off by the khorovadz, vegetarians can fall back on the fruit stalls, especially the apricot(dziran), emblematic of Armenia, the grilled ears of corn(yékipdatsorén), or "soudjouk", a sausage-shaped fruit paste (not to be confused with its Turkish namesake, the local spicy sausage which is also called "yéghtchik" here) filled with nuts and hazelnuts.
