Marks the first day of Lent for Eastern Christians. Kite Day for Greek children.
Pure Monday (Καθαρά Δευτέρα/Kathara Deftera) marks the first day of Lent for Eastern Christians. It takes place on a moveable date, forty days before Lazarus Saturday, the eve of Palm Sunday, i.e. forty-eight days before Easter. In Greece, it's traditionally a family picnic, with children playing with kites symbolizing Christ's Resurrection. Pure Monday also marks the end of the carnival season, which begins as early as January in some Greek towns.
