In the province of Nuoro, in Orosei, Orgosolo, Paulilatino and Sedilo, masked parades and bonfires for Sant'Antonio Abate.
This festival takes place all over the island at the beginning of January, but takes on a special atmosphere in the mountains of Barbagia and Baronia. It celebrates Antonio Abate, who, according to legend, stole fire from the underworld and gave it to mankind. Bonfires are lit in every village to honor this Sardinian Prometheus. The religious ceremony is followed by a popular festival of song and dance. In some villages, it even becomes a rite of initiation for young adults. Supistiddu, a cake prepared for the occasion, is eaten. This festival marks the start of the carnival season.
