On this date the baptism of Jesus is celebrated and in all the islands the pope throws a cross into the sea as a sign of blessing.
In the Orthodox rite, Epiphany celebrates not the adoration of the Christ Child by the Magi, as in the Western Christian rite, but the baptism of Jesus in the waters of the Jordan by St. John the Baptist. This is called Theophany. On all the Dodecanese islands, the Pope blesses the waters and throws a cross into the sea. In Symi and Kalymnos, for example, but also elsewhere, divers who are not afraid of the cold or who are very religious, jump into the sea in an attempt to recover the sacred cross. Processions are organized.
