Take a detour to discover an original feature, a very surprising rock shelter that looks like a hobbit's house. The Oriu de Canni is a giant taffoni, transformed into a shepherd's shelter, which constitutes a real curiosity in the region. Corsica has other shelters of this type hidden in the scrubland but the Oriu de Canni is the best known and most beautiful of them. This block of stones topped with a gigantic pointed cap owes its appearance to erosion or taffonisation (from the Corsican word "taffone" meaning "hole") digging the rock by the action of the wind and the sea spray. It is thus this geological phenomenon that we are dealing with. This natural monument is accessible in about ten minutes of walking. Its discovery remains a rather exceptional moment. On the D59 near Chera you take the direction of Canni, the path that joins the Oriu de Canni starts at the end of the village, on the right. After 5 minutes of walking, a path climbs to the left, on a hill. Take it and you will quickly reach the Oriu de Canni. This taffoni has been used as a natural shelter since prehistoric times. The shepherds of the region used it as a shelter during their transhumance, hence the stone wall that now closes the cavity. This one is quite impressive seen from the front. It gives a completely different aspect when you go around it. Do not hesitate to enter inside by the small door to appreciate the freshness of the place. A magical moment out of time. You will not regret your little climb.
