The "9 nights" festival is above all celebrated by the women and girls of India in homage to the goddess Durga and her avatars.
This festival ushers in a great period of Hindu festivities. Its name means "nine nights", and every evening, women and girls gather to celebrate Durga and her avatars. Traditional music and dance, as well as fasting and prayer, commemorate Durga's victory over evil. The festival is celebrated differently in different regions, but the symbolism remains the same. It remains above all a women's festival, in which men take no part. The 10th day of the festival marks Dussehra (celebration of Rama), followed 20 days later by Diwali.
