The elephant-god's birthday is celebrated in parades all over the country. But it's in Mumbai that the festivities are at their wildest.
The birthday of Ganesh, the popular elephant-headed god, is celebrated in all the temples dedicated to him over a 10-day period. Thousands of brightly painted effigies parade through the streets to the sound of loud PA systems, giving the festival a carnival-like atmosphere. The festival ends with a long procession and the immersion of the Ganesh effigy in water. Mumbai is where the festival reaches its climax, and the processions of tens of thousands of worshippers down to the Arabian Sea are not to be missed.
