Binion's
The most popular place for poker players offering a comps formula where drinks and nights are free
Binion's welcomes its visitors with a limousine installed in the lobby: a custom white Cadillac, with two imposing buffalo horns as a figurehead. It was the limousine that transported VIP guests on their trips to Las Vegas in the 1960s. The founder of the place, Benny Binion, is none other than a sulphurous Texas criminal implicated in three murder cases. Driven out of Dallas by the Chicago mob, the trigger-happy Binion used his entrepreneurial spirit to open the Horseshoe - the casino's historic name - in 1951 on Fremont Street, and introduced several innovations.
For example, it was the first establishment to install carpeting throughout its entire floor and to implement "comps " - free drinks and nights - to entice players to spend more. Some of the most important players have their portraits on the wall, with big smiles on their faces, and were photographed after hitting the jackpot. You too can have your picture taken next to a million dollars: in the middle of the casino there is a pyramid of $100 bills under plexiglass. Note: Binion's is the most popular place for poker players with a touch of gangsterism: it is here that they meet "off" from the big tournaments, to live their passion in a back room and bet astronomical sums. Finally, for all its luxury and history, Binion's had to close its hotel part in December 2009.
