Practical information : Eating out Wales
Timetable
Restaurants generally open around 11:30am and close around 10pm-11pm. They may close much earlier out of season and outside Cardiff. During this period, you can eat at any time - usually. Beware, too, of pubs where the kitchen closes earlier than the establishment - after 9pm it's harder to get a bite to eat.
Budget & Tips
Pubs generally serve food at reasonable prices. Count on average £15 for a dish.
What costs extra
In Wales, service is not necessarily included in the bill. If the words " service not included " appear on the menu, it's customary to leave a 10-15% tip for the waiter. Don't forget it! Otherwise, as in France, the tip you leave depends on your goodwill, bearing in mind that it's not customary to leave a tip in pubs.
The local way
Pubs and their famous fish & chips! And for breakfast, the traditional menu: sausages, fried eggs, bacon, ketchup and white beans. Don't worry, if you fancy something sweet, a continental breakfast is available almost everywhere.
At the pub, you order your beer at the counter and pay directly. Remember to memorize your table number so that the waiter can spot you.
Kids
Barring a few rare indications to the contrary, they are welcome. And most of the time, a special menu is prepared for them.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited inside bars and restaurants.
