Practical information : Going out Scotland
Timetable
In Scotland, you can go out for a drink and find a festive atmosphere in the early evening. Pubs are open until midnight or even 1 or 2 in the morning, depending on the day of the week. Beware, their kitchens often close around 8.30 pm. Clubs and nightclubs open around 11pm (some open earlier in the evening) and generally close around 3am.
Budget & Tips
Edinburgh and Glasgow are world-class cities, known for their festive student population, major sporting events, popular festivals and wild nightlife scene. Some clubs offer free entry when you arrive in the first half of the night. Depending on the club and party, it may be possible to book and purchase admission online with discounts.
All over Scotland, pubs organize live music nights: sometimes weekly, sometimes daily. And it's not just in the big cities that the parties are festive!
To be booked
Some clubs, especially in Glasgow and Edinburgh, are very popular. If you are particularly interested in a particular venue or live party, check the venue's website and buy your tickets online.
Night transport
In Edinburgh, night bus tickets allow you to travel all night for £3. Night tickets are also available in Glasgow for the same price. You can also get home by cab, at reasonable prices.
Age restrictions
Many clubs do not accept minors. As for pubs, some refuse children in the evening.
What's very local
Participate in a ceilidh (to be pronounced keïli). Originally, this Gaelic word was used to describe gatherings where stories were told, music was played and dancing. Today, ceilidhs are mainly traditional dances that play a major role in the social and cultural life of the Scottish people. It is in the pubs and in the summer on the streets that you will get a glimpse of these musical evenings.
Smokers
All establishments open to the public, including pubs and clubs, are non-smoking.
