When midnight rings, men and women march down the High Street swinging fireballs over their heads.
Stonehaven has its own ritual to celebrate the transition between the two years: a fireball ceremony! As soon as midnight sounds, men and women come out into the street and parade down the High Street swinging and spinning fireballs over their heads. The parade lasts 20 minutes and is followed immediately afterwards by fireworks, launched over the harbour and visible from all over the city. A pipe band is also on hand to liven up the streets in the run-up to the evening, as the crowds begin to flock to the streets at 9.30pm.
