The Italian railway network is rather dense. Trenitalia-Ferrovie dello Stato manages the national lines and there are many other regional companies providing local transport. Timetables are posted at all stations but are not always reliable and delays are common, although the situation is improving. Nevertheless, the train is a rather comfortable way to travel, and is particularly economical. Italian fares are among the cheapest in Europe.

Prendre le train en Sicile c'est le rêve, surtout les lignes qui longent la mer, paysage exceptionnel garanti. C'est bon marché (5,60 de Palerme à Cefalu), confortable (clim bien réglée, intérieur des wagons neuf ou refait, toilettes spacieuses car accessibles aux handicapés) et on n'est jamais importuné (nous avons bien fait une douzaine de trajets sans une incivilité)...bien loin des standards français; en revanche mieux vaut être en vacances car il y a souvent des retards (toujours annoncés) ou carrément des lignes en réfection donc remplacées par des cars. Le Trinacria, petit train reliant l'aéroport de Palerme au centre-ville est hs depuis plus d'un an... Attention aux propositions de taxis collectifs peu avantageux. Les automates distributeurs de billets parlent français. Quand on connaît le casse-tête que représente le stationnement à Cefalu ou à Palerme, c'est la solution.
