USSEL CASTLE
A superb castle on the top of a promontory in front of the town of Châtillon.
Atop a rocky promontory opposite Châtillon, Château d'Ussel, whose name derives from the Celtic word for "on top", was built in 1343 by Ebal de Challant as a military fortress. The austere one-piece structure is lightened by cylindrical turrets and geminated windows. In the mid-20th century, the château was bought by Marcel Bich, the industrialist who created the famous Bic brand of pens. On his death, he bequeathed it to the region. During your visit, you can take a panoramic view of the valley from the covered walkway.
