AËL BRIDGE
Bridge-aqueduct in Aymavilles, one of the most remarkable Roman monuments in the valley.
The Aël bridge-aqueduct is one of the valley's most remarkable Roman monuments. Dating from 3 B.C., it is an imposing structure of masonry and large stone blocks suspended several metres above the waters of the Grand'Eyvia torrent, which has carved beautiful gorges here. The upper path, at the top of the bridge, was used to transport water to the marble quarries located downstream, which provided the building materials for most of Aosta's monuments. Below the pipe, an airy passageway was used for traffic.
