It is International Labour Day - and a public holiday - but it is also a celebration of spring and nature.
The1st of May in Greece is called "Protomagia", literally: the first day of May. It is the international day of work - and a public holiday - but it is also the festival of spring and nature. On this occasion, families hang garlands of flowers above the doors of houses and on the hoods of cars. The "protomagia" also has its roots in Anthestria, a festival in honour of Dionysus, celebrating plants, flowers and the rebirth of man and nature. Wreaths and bouquets will only be unhooked at the end of June.
