April 23 is celebrated Aghios Georgios, the patron saint of knights, who is usually represented on his horse, slaying the dragon. On this occasion, a tradition continues on the island of Skiathos: a horse race is held near the lake near the airport. The rider who wins the race is blessed for the rest of the year, according to local custom. A joyful crowd gathers at St. George's chapel for the occasion and everyone can participate, in a good-natured atmosphere: racehorses, draft horses and even donkeys compete!
